Aged wood trim is beautiful in its natural state. but there may be areas where the patina is weak or some other unevennes in coloration has occurred. During the Color Correction and Custom Staining Phase, we can correct these problem areas, "painting in" stain and/or dyes to blend with the overall patina. We can also custom stain your wood to blend with specific color needs or to match the coloration of wood trim in adjacent areas. The staircase to the left was a dramatic instance of custom color staining. The handrail of this stairwell is walnut; the treads and risers are birch. The client wanted the treads to match the handrail. After much trial and error, we discovered there are no poprietary stains on the market that could stain the birch treads dark enough to match the rich gray patina which aged walnut develops. That's when we remembered an old, homegrown recipe--steel wool steeped in vinegar. When rubbed on the birch treads, this mixture reacted with the natural resins in the wood to produce the desired effect. |
