Careers at Oak Brothers
Serve the Chicagoland Area To Restore Architectural Elements Better Than They Used To Be.
Jeff occasionally makes presentations at neighborhood historical society organizations. He has also made several webinar presentations for the Chicago Bungalow Association.
Jeff Ediger, the founder and owner of Oak Brothers Historic Restoration.
Jeff received his introduction to craftsmanship while working for a third-generation Dutch house painter for several summers while attending graduate school. He became fascinated by the seemingly miraculous results that can be achieved by applying the time-tested principles and practices of an old-world craft. From the importance of good prep. work to the proper way to hold and load a paint brush to the reliability of methodically following incremental sequences–he learned that good craftsmanship yields results which seem to exceed the invested effort.
What surprised him just as much, though, is the role thoughtfulness plays in the work of craft. The experienced crafts person has what Stephen Nachmanovitch describes as “skill to burn.”[1] Working more like an improvisational musician than a rigid technician, he or she considers what is needful for the specific project at hand and applies just the right procedure and material to accomplish the task. Because he has “skill to burn,” he has many options to choose from. This, is how Jeff thinks about the essence of craft: “thoughtfulness in action, informed by time-tested skills and procedures, to accomplish beauty and purpose.”
Career Opportunities
Historic Restoration Worker
We are looking for an entry-level restoration worker with strong, transferable hand skills and 1-2 years of experience in a related trade or artisanal position who is eager to develop their potential in an architectural context. The ideal candidate will be equally committed to both craftsmanship and aesthetic/artistic values—in short, an artisanal orientation. Besides hand skills, you will have some experience with and a capacity to quickly learn to accomplish woodworking tasks with basic machine tools.
Historic Restoration Woodworker
We are looking for a skilled woodworker with a genuine appreciation for historic architectural restoration to join our company. The right person will have woodworking competency (as described below) and be eager to develop your potential in a restoration context. You have skills and experience with both hand and machine tools and take satisfaction in doing precise and beautiful, detail-oriented work. You have an artisanal orientation, meaning your approach integrates structural soundness and functional ease with aesthetic richness. Experience in restoration work is a plus, but we will train you. Strong communication skills and work ethic (defined as honesty and industriousness), as well as a commitment to respectful collegial relations, are essential.
Decorative Arts Artisan
What we will be interested in finding is someone can assist with all restoration projects, but whose specialty is in the decorative arts tradition. This person will have training and experience in rendering decorative arts finishes in historic context. This position and job description is coming soon, but feel free to email Jeff at jediger@oakbrothers.net if you are interested.
