Veneer Restoration
How to Hide an Unappealing Necessity
Balancing Fire Safety with Restoration
A fire code regulation had specified that the wood panels in this door needed to be replaced with a fire-retardant material. The homeowner was understandably not happy with this compromise to the aesthetic appeal of the door. We were able to find a wood veneer that was a close match to the wood species and grain. After applying the veneer, we stained it with a custom stain coat to match the rest of the door. We then refinished both sides of the door to achieve a unified patina and sheen.

This foyer door illustrates a similar transformation that is made possible because most vintage doors can be disassembled, thus allowing for the center panel to be removed. A former owner had replaced the central wood panel in this door with a metal screen. To restore it to its original condition, we replaced that panel with a ¼” plywood panel that has been overlayed with birch veneer. We cut the panel to size, then stained and varnished it to match the original frame of the door. As is our goal with all our restoration projects, it doesn’t look like we did anything. It just looks like the original door.
